I've not scrubbed the log yet, but it looks like I did around 160 QSOs,
activated 8 grids (EL87,88,89,EM90, EL97,98,99,EM90) and ended up around
16,000 points... well below my normal for June of around 40-60,000, but I
didn't have a roving partner, 222, 3GHz and 10GHz were on the fritz and I
had a couple of problems I didn't anticipate: 1) I was having trouble
locating the mountains or 1,500+' hills we have in Texas here (I'm sure
they're here, right?) and 2) When I would hear new calls it was challenging
to figure out which direction to point to work them since I didn't know
where everyone was!
All in all a great time and it was great to be welcomed into the group on
the air. I had several on the locals following me around including K0VXM,
N4TUT, WJ9B, KI4NPV, etc. I even got welcomed by the local FHP while QSOs
were in progress! When I was sitting on the side of I-95 talking to K0VXM
on 1296 from EM90, I noticed some flashing lights in my rearview mirror. A
lovely female FHP officer appeared on the side of my truck and wanted to
know if I was having trouble. I hesitated for a moment as I thought of
explaining that I *was* having trouble and I could really use some help
pulling Chuck out of the noise on 1296 CW, and instead just explained what I
was doing and that I appreciated her stopping to be sure I was OK. She
asked me if I would turn my hazards on so other motorists could see me so I
punched the button and started the rear strobe lights and thanked her again
hihi.
I look forward to meeting more of the group at the next meeting and finding
my QSL cards when the truck containing the 60 boxes from my ham shack and
all our other junk arrives!
73,
Steve
p.s. Do you think my wife will understand if I want to buy a house in
Windermere just to have the grid square "EL98FL"?
