Time to add some bands...

According to the ARRL band plan, the calling frequency is on 902. Other
reading I've done seems to indicate that the ARRL plan is old/out-dated and
the calling frequency is 903.

What is the frequency in use in Florida?

Also, does it make more sense to just get a 902 transverter since it will go
up the extra meg to 903?

Doug,

Unfortunately, both are in common use.  I have worked people both in the 
Northeast and in Florida on both.

What I have done is to put my IF on 145.  That way my transverter is on 902 
at 144 IF and 903 at 145 IF.

The rest of my trasnverters all have a 145.1 IF for the calling frequency.

In the northeast 903 is most common.
Out west, 902 is most common
Florida, both seem to be in use

Thanks for all of the input on 902 versus 903!

Next question:

I plan to add 902 MHz and 2.3 GHz transverters- I do not have any plans to
go any higher. (Yeah, I know I'll want to go higher once I get up to
2304...)

I have a Kenwood TS-2000X that is currently used for 432 and 1297- it will
also be the IF rig for 902 and 2304.

To keep band switching simple, I'm thinking about a 28 MHz IF 903
transverter and a 145 MHz 2304 transverter. This would allow me to go from
432 to 903 to 1297 to 2304 by just switching bands on the TS-2000X. (The
TS-2000X is not used on 144 MHz or 28 MHz, so the transverters would be
permanently set up on those outputs/inputs.)

Any thoughts on this proposed set up?

Once again, thanks to all for the input. Now the next (final?) question:

I'm looking at the Directive Systems 1376LY and 3347LY. Can they be mounted
(horizontal) to the main mast or do they need to be offset using a
fiberglass pole to avoid negative pattern effects?

I have space between the HF log and the 2M beam to mount one or both to the
mast and additional space between the 2M and the 6M beams. If they need to
be away from the steel mast, I'm going to have to get creative since putting
them on a cross-boom would almost certainly have a bad effect on the other
antennas.

Anybody using these antennas (or shorter versions) mounted on the main mast?

Are you a serious microwaver? One of those diehards who just can't stop
building stuff and go out at odd hours just to work that new grid?

Hurricanes are inevitable in FL. I'm sure another one will be coming our way
eventually. May as well
have fun with it and get creative.

First picture I get of a 10GHz and Up portable operator with gear out in a
hurricane or close to it (+/- 12 hours or so) wins a fabulous prize and
mention at the 2009 Orlando FLWSS meeting. Prefer a picture of you and your
gear with a rough surf in the background or sideways trees. (some indication
that the hurricane is near) No flying debris/dishes please. And no, I don't
expect you to be out in the middle of a CAT 5. Please use a little common
sense and self preservation.

Entries may be emailed to k4hv at arrl.net Prefer digital camera photos please.
Entries making a contact
will get bonus points! A relay to the NHC gets extra bonus points. Rain
scatter is a least possible. Please note the current weather conditions,
hurricane name, date, time, and location(6 letter grid is OK) with your
entry.

I have returned from out-of-town work, and now preparing for the ARRL
UHF contest.  Unfortunately, I am available only on Sunday of the
contest, from about 6:30 am until the end of the contest.  


BTW, I plan to put in my 1296 phemt preamp, a modification of the ssb
electronics preamp by me and Steve, n2cei.  The preamp is much
improved with an easy to get phemt replacement of the obsolete (and
expensive) mgf 1302!  I plan to write-up the modification for
others who may find it useful.


QRV through 3456mhz.
